マダイ (Sea Bream/Snapper) - 25in x 31.5in
The Japanese god Ebisu is almost always depicted holding a fishing rod and a large Red Sea Bream or Snapper. It is common practice for fishermen to pray to Ebisu before venturing out to sea. This tradition underscores the deep connection between the people of Japan and the sea. Fishermen believe Ebisu safeguards the ocean, using his powers to keep the waters pristine by pushing debris to the shore.
The Sea Bream are depicted on mulberry-based rice paper containing prominent wood fiber inclusions with oil-based ink and finished with lightfast pigments. Wet mounted for rigidity and archival stability. This is a one of a kind original artwork.
